SOMA
Situated in a strange, trashy universe, the story revolves around two creatures. A taxidermist and a butcher. The butcher gets the taxidermist hooked on his drugs, which he offers an alleged cure for the taxidermist's disease. The taxidermist becomes a junkie and gives away the
most precious love to the butcher in exchange for more drugs. After realizing what he did, he goes to take what belongs to him, but the path ahead is a one way journey.

Sandra Jovanovska is a film director and artist from Skopje (MK), currently completing her master degree at the University of Nova Gorica School of Arts. In her creative work, Jovanovska is fluctuating between digital and analogue media, frequently using the method of recycling, both physically and intellectually. Her first film Scarecrow Cross (2016) won, among others, the Best Student Film Award at the CineDays European FF in Skopje (MK), while the film Animals are Special Effects (2017) won the Best Experimental Film Award at the Progeny SFF in Blacksburg, Virginia (USA). Her graduation puppet animation film Soma received the 2019 Best DSAF Student Film Award as well as the Ostrenje pogleda Award at the Festival of Slovenian Film.
The animation “SOMA” is envisioned as a character-driven thriller, presented in a new, inventive visual aesthetics. Although situated in a parallel universe, the narrative follows a rather typical human story.
All objects in the film have an unconventional, deduced appearance, introduced in a rather theatrical, unfinished mannerism to emphasize the switch between the staged and the natural.
Furthermore, the next focal point of the action derives from my interest in addictions, both real and imaginary. My intention is to explore the connection between the two, by playing with their roles.
Finally, the story also addresses questions of forgotten love, obsession and identity. Is the only way to beat an obsession by replacing it with another one? Is our strongest, basic feature our weakest point? These are only possibilities and impossibilities which I tend to explore with this film.
