SOMA

Soma was conceived on the flight out to shoot an advert. While we often work in commercials, nobody had done a narrative short before, so we decided to take a bold chance and go forth with no planning, no budget, and minimum experience with the gear. We borrowed equipment from the job and put our faith in our talent, who first saw the script and memorized his lines on the drive over. It was Duncan's first time operating a steadicam, and only second time shooting with the Aaton 16mm camera. Ethan, our 1st AC, had never pulled focus on film and Landon, the gaffer, only had one light available.
We were gifted one can of film, so, under these crazy circumstances, were set to try and choreograph and and capture the complete movie within, at most, three takes. We put our best foot forward and, about an hour later when the last few feet rolled out of the camera, had accomplished something that we will be forever proud of.
