He has enjoyed a parallel career as an independent creator, producing and directing short films, pilots and documentaries. He is also a South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellow and a recipient of the prestigious Oscar B. Cintas Foundation Fellowship for artists of Cuban descent. His first feature-length film, Más Allá del Mar (Beyond the Sea) represents the most complete work to date on the infamous Mariel Boatlift of 1980. The film was named “Best Florida Film” at the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival and was broadcast on PBS channels nationally. His second documentary-- LA Fabri_K (The Cuban Hip Hop Factory) was filmed over the course of several months in Havana’s poor, outlying neighborhoods.
He lives with his family in Brooklyn, NY.
"Solstice" takes place in the world of the urban fantasy novel I recently wrote: HOTEL NETHERLAND. While this short film is self-contained, it also represents the first installment of an ongoing series I'm developing. There are so many weird and magical tales about this enchanted apartment building I want to bring to life. But this frightening love story in articular felt like the perfect place to start. I'm fascinated with ancient mysteries and the ways they rear their head in the modern world to remind us of the unknowable.
