Director Statement

Smile is a black comedy that deals with the dilemmas of ordinary people who suffer from the pain of not being the person they desire and not being able to attain the life they desire, and prioritizes the tragicomic aspects of these predicaments.
Although Mustafa was out of his control, he was declared sullen by his surroundings due to his facial expression, and for this reason, he is a person who is often criticized and does not get out of trouble. Due to this approach of his environment, Mustafa, who is more and more introverted and refraining from communicating with people, gets caught up in the idea of a radical "image change" of his cunning friend and puts it into practice. With the sad news from his hometown, he learns that his father's leg was amputated, he has to go home with his new and interesting image, and he becomes the center of attention with his funny image in contrast to this painful situation. The journey they embark on with a cut leg and the son of his uncle, who is the complete opposite of himself, is pregnant with many tragedies and absurdities at the same time.
The picture that emerged when the character traits of Mustafa, who wronged himself, and Mehmet, the son of his uncle, who did harm to others, came together, started to show us the ground on which this project would rise. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the story that emerged from the tragedy and evolved into the absurd has created its own unique language and succeeded in following us. It can contain both tragedy and comedy. Just like when we go to a funeral, despite the gloomy atmosphere, we have never been and an absurd memory can be revived in our minds, and we think that a film can create a unique universe of meaning by knitting such situations, just as we can start to laugh after a day of bad luck. Sometimes the thing that completes a character's emotion is an overturned glass on the table, a nylon blowing in the wind, or the movement of an animal that makes sense of the moment. In this direction, the visual language we designed for the film; It will be in a way that does not try to get ahead of the story, where the camera captures unexpected details, is in the position of a sentry eye that finds out the absurdities in the tragedy.
Considering the number of stories that are tried to be told with pure humor or pure drama in the cinema, we think that the flavors we will encounter in the dark world of this story, which is based on humor, is a variety.
