Rirkrit Tiravanija reimagines Fassbinder's
1974 classic Ali: Fear Eats the Soul as a readymade sculpture starring artist Karl Holmqvist in the role of German cleaning lady Emmi who falls in love with the much younger Moroccan guest worker Ali (Hamid Amini).
Supported by a rotating cast of Tiravanija's friends and gallery staff and shot entirely in makeshift sets within the artist's exhibition at his New York gallery, Gavin Brown's Enterprise, over the course of only 8 days in September 2017, the film investigates pressing questions of age, race, class, and gender and connects the rise of populism and the current political climate in the US and Europe
