SKALA

Searching in the dark; reinventing beauty; pure rage; dissolving into defeat. Through five chapters alternating between dark and light this video investigates how human emotions change over time – how it is the inevitable succesion of anxiety and well-being that becomes a reliable constant in life.

The video is the visual accompaniment for the instrumental music album SKALA by Ghost Flute & Dice. Written specifically to be performed in a disused water tower the music combines piano, electronic effects and surround sound. The title is the danish word for "scale" referring both to musical scales but also the shear enormity of the venue itself. With a reverb time of 20 seconds the watertower would make every sound a world unto its own.

Both music and pictures are influenced by this reverb time in that they move very slowly – mirroring the ebb and flow of contrasting mental states. Starting off in the water tower – where the music was originally premiered - the video moves outdoors combining different unnatural performers with unnerving nature settings.

Director Biography - Søren Meisner / Mikkel Almholt

SKALA is very much a music video - in the sense that music and video contribute equally to the experience. The project is therefore best described as a joint venture between composer Mikkel Almholt (artist name Ghost Flute & Dice) and videographer Søren Meisner.

Søren Meisner is educated from The Danish Design School (KADK), and is working as a videographer, photographer and graphic designer, mainly in performing arts. His work includes several music videos, including a series of five, spanning a double album for Distortion Girls.

Mikkel Almholt is a composer and pianist releasing albums under the moniker Ghost Flute & Dice for the last ten years. The music is centred around the acoustic piano but Almholt uses both digital effects and alternative playing techniques to create multilayered soundscapes that bring out the more dissonant sides of the instrument.

Director Statement

The purpose for making this music video was originally to have visuals that could be used as accompaniment at concerts. The music had been composed specifically for the venue Brønshøj Vandtårn which is a disused watertower in Copenhagen. And in order to play the music elsewhere the idea was to have visuals featuring the amazing architecture of the watertower.

But inspiration got in the way and soon ideas emerged for a much more varied and ambitious video. Talented performers were hired and creepy outdoor settings were found. When everything was edited together it was clear that the result had become an artwork in itself.

The ambient but at the same time dramatic character of the music made it an easy fit with visuals. At the same time the suggestive and open-ended visuals never hi-jacked the music. Through hard work, massive help and fortuitous circumstances SKALA has become a thing of its own that we are very proud of and excited to present to the rest of the world.
