As many performing artists are, we’ve been asking ourselves, how do we progress an art form based on human connection and collaboration in times of isolation and separation.

Cut to: The Shut In Dance Film Fest ( @shutindancefilmfest).

Collaborate with Musicians, Actors, Choreographers, and Filmmakers to help create a high quality short film. GET FREE classes on how to use FILMIC PRO and Shoot interesting and High Quality footage from your phone.

SUBMIT footage based on a Creative Directors prompt. Selected footage will be used in final product.

WHAT WE DO:
Curate our creative director, editing team and music.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Our Creative Director gives you direction. For example: Someone has done you wrong. How do you deal with it? Film 30-45 seconds using movement, a prop and your environment to show us.
You might get music, you might get a movement phrase for you to interpret or you might not. It’s all up to the CD.

THEN WHAT?
You will film using a camera, or Filmic Pro (iPhone, Android) and submit. (WE PROVIDE A TUTORIAL ON HOW TO SHOOT VIA OUR INSTAGRAM PAGE).

HOW DO YOU SUBMIT?
Submit your Videos VIA FilmFreeway,a downloadable VIMEO link. 1080P or higher preferred.

AND THEN HOW DOES THIS FILM COME TOGETHER?
Our CD (Creative Director) will make selects and work with musicians and an editor, remotely, to produce a high quality short film using your footage.

OK. SOUNDS COOL… BUT THEN WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SHORT FILM?
We screen the finished short films on our VIMEO PAGE and on other screening platforms TBD. Each contributing artist is credited.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO PARTICIPATE AND WHO GETS PAID?
It doesn’t cost anything. This is not about money it’s about making collaborative art in a time when we can’t physically get together. It’s about continuing to work with new artists to propel art in general, forward. It’s about being creative and using your imagination!

EVERY MONTH we select new creative directors to participate in the Fest.

FOR APRIL 2020 we have teamed up with Stephanie Kim, WHYTEBERG, dendy/donovan, and Madi Hicks as contributing Creative Directors who will be providing prompts for dancers or other performing artists to respond to physically.

How is this different than other Social Distancing projects?

A major part of the Shut In Dance Film Fest is FREE lessons from LA Filmmakers an Directors on how to shoot movement and dance for the camera. The lesson will include info on how to use your iPhone or Android as a nice quality alternative to an expensive DSLR Video Camera. Participants will give gifted info on Framing, Shooting, and Lighting that could be done from home to use in response to the prompts from the Creative Directors. Selected submissions will be edited together for a high quality short dance/movement film, made in collaboration while separated. Participation and submission is entirely FREE!

A note from out founder:

"SHUT IN DANCE FILM FEST’s mission is to continue new artistic partnerships in a time of separation. This is a wonderful way for dancers/actors/musicians from all over the world to work with an artist they might not get to based on location. Making dance films of quality is important so that our time here, in this quarentine, does not feel like a space holder but an opportunity to grow as an art form. As an artist and an educator it is important to me see our community take new information and create meaningful and inspired art. In this dance Film Fest we are doing just that! ”

- Nicole Berger, Choreographer for BROOKLYN NINE NINE, THE GOOD PLACE, VEEP and Artistic Director of LA contemporary company, COMPANY RHOME
