SEED

Jorge Orta is an artist who lived through a cruel military regime that terrorised Argentina between 1974-1983. Known as the ‘Dirty War’, suspected communists, artists, intellectuals and writers were placed in detention centres, tortured and raped under a state-sponsored process of eradication and disposal. Protest had to be in silence and Jorge was moved to construct several actions and art works which could never be revealed at the time. Decades later, Jorge decides to take a journey from the spectacular deserts of Central America to the streets of Buenos Aires, recalling the corruption and performing these acts of protest and resistance. Using non-actors and with minimal dialogue, this is one man’s poetic journey through an epic landscape, which reflects on the loss of innocence, oppressive states and the cruelty of man.

Director Statement

I have been working with Lucy and Jorge Orta for over 15 years directing and filming their video works and collaborating on various artist commissions. They are internationally renown artists with a reputation for making thought provoking and challenging works that deal with issues of climate change, threatened ecology, world poverty, immigration, social inclusion and the politics of food and water. Jorge was born in Rosario, Argentina, and often spoke to me about his life as an artist living through the social and political context of a military dictatorship and what he experienced during this period of injustice and revolutionary violence. A fire tragically destroyed his Paris studio in 1991, including the archive of his Argentine body of work and performances. After a period of 20 years, Jorge discussed with me his ambition to do a road trip from La Paz in Bolivia to Buenos Aires in Argentina where we would record, recall and perform a series of actions he devised during his Rosario period. With limited funds and an enthusiastic team of artists and volunteers, the project was realised and we journeyed across central South America, recording lots of actions over a period of 10 days. Unfortunately the project ran out of money and it took another 12 years to complete. SEED is the final result of a remarkable journey. It is a film full of passion that has been fortified by time and enriched by the process of memory and making.
