SAPANA | himalayan trek to dreams

“SAPANA | himalayan trek to dreams" is a documentary reportage from an extraordinary bicycle expedition around the Annapurna massif in the Himalayas. Driving towards the Thorung La Pass located at an altitude of 5416 m above sea level, the filmekers talk to tourists, Nepalese, Sherps and teachers they meet on the way. They reflect on dreams and the possibilities of making them come true. Continuing Paulo Coelho's thought: " It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.”

Director Statement

"It all starts with dreams..." these are the words of the Polish Himalayan mountaineer Krzysztof Wielicki, the first winter conqueror of Mount Everest. And this was also the case with my film "SAPANA | Himalayan Trek to Dreams".
The idea was born during my 40th birthday, when after reading many books about the Himalayas, a dream was born to go to the Highest Mountains in the World. To see the place where famous Himalayan climbers such as Jerzy Kukuczka or Reinhold Messner were, to see where they slept, where they ate, what the paths they walked on looked like. This is how I decided to make my dream come true - to go to the Himalayas.
During the expedition, we shot the film, interviewed tourists, sherpas and representatives of the local community encountered along the way. The film consists of elevation blocks that show what happens at a given altitude, how vegetation, temperature, people, everything changes. These elevation levels are of great importance in the high mountains, hence the structure of the film. The inspiration in the selection of pictures were the contrasts encountered in the Himalayas – the cool color of snowy peaks and the warm colors of sandy valleys. Hot and cold, hence the choice of color palette in color grading.
This is how a film about the dreams of people living around the Annapurna massif was made through the prism of making my own dream come true. The film SAPANA ("sapana" in Nepalese language means "a dream"), not only tells about the physical hardships of the expedition, but also introduces the culture of Nepal and the everyday life of its inhabitants. The film aims to evoke reflection on dreams and hope it will activate the viewers to start making their dreams come true, not necessarily sports one. As Walt Disney used to say, "If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It”
