SALAR

This three-channel video installation portrays a journey taken by Cristiane Bouger and her brother, Tiago Martins Borges, in the Atacama Desert, Chile and in the Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia, in 2019.

The leitmotif of this piece is the silent meditation of two siblings, reflecting upon their trajectories, family history, and on the death of their older brother, Nereu, back in 1999. The work captures the passing of time, and the memories and doubts they hold within. The conduction of the piece is informed by the colors and textures of the landscapes they traverse in their itinerancy. The inner rhythm and the state of suspension and mourning in their thoughts are emphasized by the editing by Flemming Fynsk and the music by K. Leimer.

SALAR might be seen as a silent prayer, as the surrendering to nature and the flux of time, as a way to think about the fragility in each one’s ephemeral passage through this world.

Director Statement

“The substance of my practice reflects on the paradoxical nature of human experience with its clash, overlapping, and intertwinement of existence/essence, immanence/transcendence, presence/absence, and biography/fiction. Through my interdisciplinary work I aim to provoke dissonances and the displacement of meaning to ignite an unexpected perceptual apprehension on the viewers. I look for the gap in which the automatized recognition of meaning fails, allowing space for reflection and contemplation.”— Cristiane Bouger
