Rural to Urban Migration in Bangladesh

Rural to urban migration is a phenomenon that has always been prevalent in our nation. The consistent and steady rise in this form of migration has also given leeway to a rise in centralization as the country’s major cities are being flooded by an influx of people from different divisions and districts. The focus of this project is to shed light on the adverse effects of this migration in Bangladesh and what could be the possible future if this continues to grow in the upcoming years. The documentary will highlight some of the ways in which this large-scale migration affects the population of Dhaka and Chittagong as well as the economy and infrastructure of the country’s major cities.

Rural to urban migration has always existed in our nation but has recently gained more momentum after the Coronavirus pandemic. The effects of this migration are not felt directly or immediately but rather over a longer period of time and with small but sharp hits for both the national economy and its people.

The purpose of this documentary is to remind and educate people on these effects and how they can lead to an overall decrease in the standard of living. The documentary also aims to showcase the urgent need for decentralization of human capital, resources and economic activities. Decentralization can lead to an overall spread and fair allocation of resources which can help reduce the need for rural to urban migration.
