Raymond Martinez, originally from Wichita, KS, found his creative footing in Albuquerque, NM, a place he now calls home. His passion for filmmaking began at 14 with a mini DV camera, inspired by dreams of working in the film industry one day. After moving to New Mexico, he returned to school at the University of New Mexico, graduating in May 2024 with a BFA in Film and Digital Media.
Returning to school also ignited Raymond's passion for cinematography, which he is now pursuing as a career. With a strong eye for visual storytelling and a desire to bring more stories to life, he is eager to continue exploring the joy of filmmaking.
Runaround is my senior capstone project that I wrote, directed, DP'd, and edited. I don't mention that to be some egotistical, self-aggrandizing, vainglorious maniac, though I see where, even with that disclaimer, it likely still comes off as such. I say it because I loved making this film so much, and it means the world to me—flaws and all, because it represents the culmination of years of learning, working, struggling, passion, indifference, hope, doubt, rivalries, and friendships. But the real lesson that I learned through it all is that you can't take things too seriously. If you can't laugh at it, then it's not real—it's not being genuine to the flawed nature of humanity. Being able to laugh at yourself means having the ability to say I'm not perfect.
That’s what this film is about. It’s a comedy filled with goofy characters, and I know I’ve worn the mask of every one of them at some point in my life. Wearing all the hats to bring this ridiculous story to life was my chance to laugh at myself and the absurdity of it all. And I hope others can laugh at it, too.
