Director Statement

Rue Tea is a dark drama short film that worked as a medium for artistic research. During the Mexican Revolution (1910's), Isabel, the protagonist, guides us through her fears, and towards overcoming them. The result of her choices is not necessarily pacific, but it's founded on the acceptance of her own internal darkness, represented by a beast that stalks her, and which she finally accepts as her own, to be freed from the sexist violence that chases her.

This project addresses, through a practice based artistic investigation, the situation of women that live in violent relationships and how is it that they get out from them, abortion in unfavorable conditions, and the familiar bond between women. The stated themes are stablished through a feminist view, theory and practice, which implies a filming protocol cemented in ethics of care and a narrative treatment founded in the same logic.

My interests originate in my love for horror films, as well as personal experience, being a survivor from a violent relationship myself. During the project's elaboration I got to interview women that lived similar situations, discovering that, our situatios where pretty alike, almost as if the aggressor was the same person, an archetypal character taken from a film.
