Not all life's lessons come from a textbook.

Navigating life in LA comes with a huge learning curve. For Royal, a college student and hopeful singer-songwriter from the Midwest, getting discovered by a talent manager just days after moving to LA could be the answer to her prayers, or the beginning of a nightmare, when she ends up saddled rooming with Scarlet, the newly emancipated, out of work, former star of Anna Louisiana.

For Royal getting discovered seems too good to be true. It really can't be that easy, can it? No. It can't. Royal finds out it takes more than luck and talent; it takes drive, determination, grit, and maybe just a little bit of foolishness. Making it is hard.

While Royal is learning how to make it in Hollywood, Scarlet is learning how to make it in life. She soon learns being an adult is not all it is cracked up to be. She does not even know how to pay a parking ticket, let alone how to do even the most basic things for herself so how will she manage to salvage her waning her career? Face it; life is hard.

In the first season, it soon becomes clear it is not about making it; it is about finding out who you are once it is made. It is about learning that getting an A in Life101 is not about owning a sparkly new Maserati, but about owning the path, you forge.

In the pilot presentation of this episode, Roommates 101, Faith gets asked to stay on in Milan and asks Royal to rent her room out. That's fine by Royal because there is no way she wants to be stuck living with Scarlet by herself! Airbnb has nothing on them, as they set out to interview several candidates in person. The Crazy Cat Lady is the first to show up, indicating that it won't be as easy as they thought. After going through four other applicants, each with their own set of flaws, Royal and Scarlet are no closer to finding a new roommate than when they started.

Director Biography - Melody R. Herr

Melody was born and raised by her single mom, three blocks north of 8 Mile in Warren, Michigan. While Eminem was making 8 Mile famous through his rap career and filming his subsequent biopic named after this now famous dividing line between Detroit and the suburbs, Herr attended Michigan State University and Lawrence Technological University where she graduated with honors. Leaving the poverty and decay of South Warren was a battle won only by her trademark determination and perseverance as she strove for a better life.

Since then, she has lived in four US States, spent three years residing in Yokohama, Japan, and six years (on and off) living in Leamington Spa, England, and has traveled to over 25 countries.

After living and traveling all around the world, she moved to LA and opened Little Fish Entertainment in the Fall of 2012 and began producing music videos, concerts, and fundraisers. In 2014 she decided to move her company in the direction of scripted theatrical production and produced their first 30-minute single-camera comedy "The Royals" which was a finalist in the Top Shorts International Film Festival. Since then she has produced two additional pilot presentations, has another pilot and a feature film in development, and is currently working on a coming of age comedy called "The 101". The pilot presentation of "The 101" was an official selection of the SoCal Creative and Innovative Film Festival.

Melody is Married with Children, three to be exact. Two of them have made it successfully to adulthood; the verdict is still out on the teenager. (That's just cheeky; her youngest is a great kid and makes a great boom operator!)

Director Statement

Our budget was too small to hire an experienced Director so, this was my first time directing. Having previously produced The Royals and being on set for other productions, I wasn't a total novice, but I thank my experienced DP, Stephanie Ollerton, for her immense patience. It was an honor to be part of this all-female creative team and work with such a talented cast and crew.
