Annually since 2002, RIFF has brought the best in contemporary international and independent film to the Inland Empire region of Southern California, the fastest growing area in America. In this, our 16th year, RIFF seeks diverse and challenging films of social upheaval, human conflict, and the boldness of the human spirit. We also enjoy the best of comedy, mystery, science fiction. and horror. We particularly appreciate subtitled films, student films, and animation. A very high percentage of filmmakers and actors attend to present their films and to participate in workshops and forums.

The festival had a fun opening-night party and hospitable organizers. I couldn't stay long but hope to go back in the future.

I had a very negative experience attending Riverside film festival. As some reviews mention, communication was low but fortunately I received all the info I needed to attend. The opening night gala was fine, some good speakers and a few complimentary items. The event venue and film program were well done. My complaints come with the screening of my film.

I made an 8 minute short and was paired with 2 completely unrelated films, one was about 10 minutes long and one was 45 minutes. The audience was sparsely full which was fine, but what was egregious was that more than half of the people attending came in late during the screening of my film (first on the lineup), disrupting the screening significantly given the venue was very echo-y and required you to walk in front of the screen to enter. To make matters worse, multiple of the patrons were using their cell phones to find their seats, completely disrupting the screening and showing no engagement in the film onscreen. Especially because my film was a very short thriller, this completely ruined the intended effect. I found it frustrating that the venue staff made no effort to stop this (perhaps by making people wait to enter until the first film finished) and by pairing films so randomly I was disappointed how little interest the audience had.

As a filmmaker, this was not a pleasant or comfortable experience to showcase my work, and would not recommend the same for others. For the film festival to improve, I would need to see better pairing of films and much greater effort toward maintaining theater etiquette. I've seen smaller festivals do this much more effectively. And to top it off, there was no communication after the festival to announce winners or other forms of info.

We have taken your suggestions seriously and will make sure there is a staffer in the theater to ensure the movies are not interrupted. We do try to pair similar themed movies, and will make every attempt to improve this for next year.
