Matthew Pelton is a young filmmaker currently attending Emerson College for Visual & Media Arts.
I was beyond terrified when I started making this movie. I did a lot of filmmaking in High School with my old best friend and film partner, Guy-Paul Delisfort, but we unfortunately went to different colleges. I had never done anything on my own. I never even had an original idea without the help and guidance of someone else. If I’m being honest, I didn’t think I had it in me.
One of the skills I learned with Guy-Paul was how to make people laugh, especially through film. He went off and started making these beautiful dramatic pieces, and for a while I tried to follow in his footsteps. I wrote so many god awful dramatic short films that I pray never see the light of day.
After trail and error, I decided to head back to my roots. I’ll just make another comedy: I know how to do that (somewhat). With the help of all my friends up at Emerson, we managed to stitch “Riverfork Community College” together.
It’s the first thing I’ve truly made without Guy-Paul, and while it was scary, I’m proud to say I did it. It’s the longest short film I’ve made, hitting over half an hour, and it’s littered with special effects, extras, stunts, props, etc… It was a big project, and it means a lot to me and everyone who was a part of it.
I hope you enjoy my first solo outing as a director.
