Marco Buontempo was born in Córdoba Argentina. He graduated from the The National University of Córdoba with a bachelor's degree in Cinema and television. In 2017 he received the ELAP scholarship to study film at Mel Hoppenheim School, Concordia, in Montreal. He directed two films, «Naked» (2019) and «Rio» (2020), both premiered in international film festivals. His courses include numerous national cinema and film aesthetics. His graduate thesis explored queer cinema and many of his queer short stories were awarded in Argentina. He currently lives in Buenos Aires and works in the audiovisual industry.
Río came up after numerous long talks between the producers, Ignacio Jairala, Walter Perez, and myself, about present-day life. Gay relationships and behavior. Youth and growing up. The urge for masculinity in today's gay scenario. Identity, and first and foremost, love.
I have considered Bruno and Franco as sensitive human beings right from the start. They are on their way to acceptance and regard their situation with humor and longing. Bruno's character provides the film with conservative views towards being gay, even when standing out of the closet. Franco, on the contrary, tends to be open and unrestricted. I wanted to make a film set in the present-day age, in Córdoba, where being gay according to a certain stereotype of masculinity and appearance is paramount. Youth culture plays an important role. Bruno and Franco belong to a society that hierarchized roles such as top or bottom, and there's a lot of sissyphobia and discrimination towards effeminate behaviors.
Río is a film about a young couple that reunites, and eventually, through dialog, they search for their identity, who they used to be, and who they are.
I pictured a colorful film, set in the countryside. A place where abandoned buildings of an old society enable them to be intimate, far and away from the city. A slightly romanticized version of reality.
What is universal about it, is that for each and every one of us, it is challenging to accept that one was not made according to the norm, and the stress it causes to build up an image for so long, to create bonds with others without knowing how.
