Rimless

Rimless is an experimental dance film exploring spirituality of things. Rooted in the Chinese philosophy of “Heaven, Earth and Human”, the film illustrates the idea that everything has a soul. We choose “erhu”, the traditional instrument regarded as the Chinese counterpart of the violin, and try to call out the soul of it through the fusion of fingerprint painting and body language. The “erhu” is divided into parts (the sound box, the stem, and the tuning pegs) and a stylized language of the lens is applied, thus strengthening the spirituality of the instrument itself. At the same time, the abundance of body language displayed by the combination of changing lenses, scenes, and focal lengths reflects the photographer’s ambition -- to break through the boundaries of physical motion with cameras. If “body” is the tool of dance, then “erhu” is the tool of erhu music; inside the two there live souls. They echo with each other and create a new energy field, which is the so-called “symbiosis”. This is the thinking triggered by the post-epidemic era. Human beings have already passed the age of asking questions about the origin of life. How to live and thrive with all things in the universe (including viruses) is the current task. As a short film digging the philosophy of life, it employs the imagery of “fingerprint” in a attempt to symbolize the scratches of vicissitude, the reincarnation of time and space, and the fission before the nirvana of life.
