South Australian's Dale Dale has been creating short horror and bad taste comedies (award-winning and/or nominated) filthy films since 1993.
Dick is also guilty of being a scarred veteran of fronting self destructive punk rock bands since the mid 1980's. He is a repeat offender of other associated crimes (spoken word performance, scapegoat event organiser) in the underground music counterculture.
He spawned and has been curating the infamous and irreverent Trasharama-ago go Film Festival which is now celebrating it's twenty Fifth year. Trasharama is the premiere and undisputed nastiest film Festival in Australia. It annually screens short horror, bad taste comedy and other cinematic oddities from all over this planet. It now runs in cahoots with Melbourne's Monster Fest each year.
His labor of love, first feature film Ribspreader contains all the aesthetics of his creative life moshed into 90 minutes of madness, splatteriffic fun and cartoon punk rock mayhem!
It has so far been selling out screenings' to very positive reviews at the Adelaide Film Festival and Monster Fest. It recently took the Audience Favorite award at the Adelaide International Film Festival and won Best Picture at 2022 Monster Fest. Being an Independent genre film this was quite a feat.
Ribspreader - a Neo-Ozploitation film for the next generation!
My ambition was to make the craziest film to come out of my home state, South Australia, and as a result, Ribspreader won the Audience Award at the Adelaide International Film Festival, 2022, and Best Picture Award at Monster Fest International Film Festival, 2022.
Ribspreader is in good company as Adelaide is the home of iconic Australian films Bad Boy Bubby and Wolf Creek. Created on the unbelievably low budget of AUD $24,000, I barely scratched the surface with a film of this ambition. Thanks to the incredible artists who have worked on blockbusters such as Mortal Kombat and Mad Max: Furiosa, Ribspreader features practical Effects, VFX, miniatures, a puppet and outlandish settings. A convoy of hot rods and motorbikes, a wrestler and Ozpoitation superstar, Chantal Contouri (Snapshot, Thirst). By the time I had completed Ribspreader, joining Chantal were Laurence Harvey (Human Centipede 2 & 3), Rat Scabies (The Damned), Lloyd Kaufman (Troma Films), Chad Morgan (Australian country music icon), Spencer P. Jones (Beasts of Bourbon), Wayne Mattei (Young Rock), and Svetlanas featuring Nick Oliveri (Queens of the Stone Age). Lloyd Kaufman was filmed at Troma studios in New York and Rat Scabies was shot at a graveyard in London.
Appropriately set in back alleys and abandoned warehouses, Ribspreader maintains an authenticity that's impossible to find with an actual budget. Post-production was completed in lounge rooms and garages by friends and film fanatics.
For twenty-five years I have screened bad taste and genre shorts on the screen at my own annual Australian film festival, Trasharama-agogo. Beyond that, I have played in punk rock and hardcore bands and I have rubbed shoulders with Australia's underbelly, working in Adelaide's dirtiest dive bars. What you see up on that screen is what I know; it's my lifestyle that inspired the story and characters in Ribspreader - though any similarities to characters and situations are purely coincidental. I'm not freakin nuts! Ribspreader could only have been created by a veteran of the Australian punk rock culture. Australia's first splatterpunk video nasty feature. Ironically, one of my crew had to have a rib removed during production. Ribspreader is real D.I.Y punk rock cinema - by any means necessary!
In addition to the feature film, Screen Australia funded, Video Nasty: the making of Ribspreader, directed by Matthew Bate from Closer Productions, currently in post-production. In the spirit of the beer and pizza Saturday night VHS rentals of my teens, Ribspreader is ninety minutes of laughs, insanity, surprises, good music and over-the-top splatter. No filler!
