Marc Anthony Massimei fell in love with filmmaking through film music. It was the marriage of orchestral music and moving images that inspired his desire to become a filmmaker. In his early 20s, Marc began creating short films and a feature. He would call them glorified home videos but these projects gave Marc a taste of what was possible. Having his hand in virtually every role of these early works, from acting to handling most crew positions, including composing the music, Marc was hooked, especially with directing. Years later, after a few corporate videos and a short documentary film, Marc seized the opportunity to write, direct, produce, and edit his first budgeted narrative short film, "Reviled."
Reviled: A Story of Faith, Survival, and Redemption
Reviled is a cautionary tale of survival and self-discovery, following Hannah as she struggles to reconcile the truth of her tragic past and the dystopian world she lives in. In a nation where freedom is no longer free and nothing is sacred, anyone who believes in liberty is deemed the enemy.
At the heart of the story is the resilience of faith in a society where religion is outlawed. Hannah’s journey mirrors the struggle of believers throughout history who persevere in their convictions despite relentless persecution. Despite the overwhelming presence of an authoritarian regime, she chooses to seek the truth and defend the innocent. The Bible, a symbol of truth and spiritual freedom, connects her to her mother’s legacy and the underground faith community. The story illustrates how faith can survive and thrive even under oppression.
The story portrays an unseen spiritual battle between light and darkness as Hannah fights for her survival. While the regime is a visible enemy, darker forces seek to extinguish faith itself. The film reminds viewers that though evil may seem overwhelming, goodness will prevail in the end.
Despite its bleak setting, Reviled is ultimately a story about hope and purpose. Reviled champions moral courage. Hannah chooses to stand for truth, even at great personal risk. Once paralyzed by fear, Hannah steps into her calling with courage, strengthened by the memory of her mother’s love and faith. The agents, especially Peter, symbolize a system consumed by darkness, while Samuel and the underground community represent hope and redemption.
Reviled conveys the enduring power of faith in a world where truth is suppressed. It affirms that light cannot be extinguished, faith transcends persecution, and hope endures in those who believe. Suspenseful yet uplifting, Reviled aims to redeem the broken and inspire audiences to seek truth and grace. Even in the darkest times, light will prevail.
