FILMFEST BREMEN
Born in 1981 in Vienna, Austria, Flo Convey started stage acting at a young age. After his graduation, he took acting classes at the film school Vienna. As a result he played various roles at many different theatres all over Austria.
As a film fan, the interest in directing grew more and more over the years. In 2012 he made his bachelor in media-technology to acquire the technical know-how. After internships in Los Angeles and Munich he started working for a big TV commercial production company, first as editor, later as director. After a couple of short films, „Return of the thumb“ is his first feature film.
As a big sports fan, I got inspired by the classic old sport movies, like Rocky, Over the Top or Bloodsport, which I grew up with. So I always wanted to make a movie about sports. Since I didn't want to miss out on the comedic part, I reinvented Thumb wrestling as a full contact sport. Originally thumb wrestling is a child's game, but we tried to toughen it up, and put some blood, sweat and tears into it.
We developed different fighting styles and moves, also very unique training methods.
The idea was born in 2012, when I made a short film, called „Thumb of the Tiger“, which was a college project. That's when I fell in love with thumb wrestling and alle possibilities it contains.
I was also able to use some footage of the shortfilm for the feature. I used it as Archive material, which worked out really well.
