Surbhi Mittal, an Indian director and writer is known for her first short film Rent a Friend (2023), a film that showcased her distinct storytelling sensibilities. Based in New York City, born in India, and after having lived in Japan for 8 years, she has realized one thing, emotions have no countries or borders. With the filmmaking certification from NFYA behind her, she pledges to make films that spark conversations around relationships, mental health, emotions, life, and all its various shadows which we are seldom afraid to embrace. Innovative use of storytelling techniques, unconventional narratives, and thought-provoking themes are what she abides by in her filmmaking process. She is also a certified life coach, a skill that helps her in exploring the vulnerabilities of her characters. Prior to becoming a filmmaker she had a long corporate stint of 20 years.
This film is an ode to various lives and emotions you find on the streets of NYC and how the "new normal" life is post-COVID. If the film makes you take a pause and breathe, remember a friend you haven't talked to for a while, or make you embrace your vulnerabilities; my job as a director is done. Hope you enjoy the film.
