René Herrera received a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from ITESM. He worked as production assistant and assistant director in several ad production companies, and was personal assistant to Mr. Alfredo Ripstein —producer of “The Crime of Padre Amaro” and “Midaq Alley” — at Alameda Films for 2 ½ years. Since then, he’s written 12 feature film screenplays (“¿Seguros?,” “La Fórmula del Dr. Funes,” “Nada te Faltará,” “La Fuga,” “Noche sin Cielo,” “Aquiles,” “Entrenando a mi papá,” “Negro con una de azúcar,” “Campeones a los 17,” “Teoría de un Hombre Muerto,” “Los Nueve y Sereno,” and “Tiempo para mí”) and more than a dozen short films. “Entrenando a mi papá,” directed by Walter Doehner, premiered on September 2015 in Mexican cinemas. The film starred Mauricio Islas, Jacqueline Bracamontes, Adriana Barraza, and Saraí Meza.
He has also created, co-created and written several television series, including “Marco ‘Pinky’ Jiménez,” “Demencia,” “El Incidente,” “Cajas,” “Monstruos”, “El Cerrajero,” “Mejor muerto que vivo,” “Foto Familiar,” “Sitiados,” “Cuestión de géneros,” among others. Through Blueprint (a Mexican content development company), he signed an option deal with Paradigm Agency (Los Angeles), to produce “Marco ‘Pinky’ Jimenez” with major studios. “Demencia” was recently shot by Sony Television. He’s also the creator and writer of the web series “Los Vivos”.
He directed the short film “Igualdad”, winning the Best Short Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress Awards in La Neta Rally’s short film competition, organized by La Neta Films, in Puebla. The short film also participated in International Short Film Festivals in Spain, Colombia, Finland; Monterrey, Chihuahua, and Short Shorts, Mexico. Likewise, it was one of 10 finalists in the AXN Film Festival 2010. “Damas y Caballeros” (Ladies and Gentlemen), his most recent short film, has been in the Guadalajara International Film Festival, Cannes Film Festival (Short Film Corner), Guanajuato International Film Festival, where it won the ‘Raise Awareness against Domestic Violence’, for Best Mexican Short Film, Short Shorts Film Festival Official Selection, Latino Film Festival in Flandes, Belgium; Cuenca Film Festival, Ecuador, among others.
He has taken film and acting workshops with Ademir Kenovic (“The Perfect Circle”), Ignacio Ortiz (“Mezcal”), Jorge Zárate, Corina Mestre, Rudi Mora, Paz Alicia Garciadiego, Luisa Huertas, Leonardo García Tsao, Carole Kirschner, among others.
