Director Statement

This film stands as a testament to the power of young voices reclaiming and reimagining the stories that have shaped our communities. As the inaugural cohort of Bama Black History 365, we were deeply moved to uncover the story of Alabama’s first Black hospital—an institution born out of necessity, resilience, and vision—right on the grounds of Tuskegee University, one of our nation’s most storied HBCUs.

Our goal was not only to document history but to make it felt. Through a collaborative process rooted in research, storytelling, and visual exploration, we each brought our strengths to the project: research that unearthed forgotten truths, writing that honored the people behind the place, and cinematography that gave the story new life. In doing so, we hope to inspire others to look deeper into the institutions around them and recognize the legacies they carry.

This project is more than a film—it’s a call to remember, to honor, and to keep telling the stories that too often go untold.
