Redolence
Kasen has decided it’s time for her family to meet her girlfriend’s family, so she invites both families to her apartment. Kasen wants things to be perfect, so she becomes over controlling. She overhears her younger brothers Timothy and Matt talking about their dead dad and this sets Kasen on a downhill spiral. She yells at her brothers to stop talking about their dad. Her girlfriend pulls her aside to talk about her dad. Kasen realizes she was a jerk to her brothers and apologizes. She tells everyone a story about her dad that makes everyone laugh.

“Redolence” was created from this idea that moving on after loss meant forgetting. Personally, after losing my own father, I struggled with being able to move on and live my life without feeling like I was letting go of my dad or leaving him behind. I want my film to express moving on doesn’t mean leaving behind and sadness isn’t the only way to process loss.
With my film a theme I want to explore is that even in darkness there’s beauty. Drawing from my own personal experience of losing my dad, I want to be truthful and speak from a place of experience that is true to my own life. Sometimes seeing the beauty in darkness just takes time and sometimes it’s a matter of being ready and wanting to see the beauty and not just the sad darkness. Another important theme I want my film to address is that loss never gets easier but that the spaces between the times you miss someone get longer. After my dad died everyone around me kept saying the same thing to me “Loss gets easier with time”. When I first lost my dad, I didn’t understand why people were saying this but now that I have a different perspective this is something I would never say to someone and wouldn’t want to hear from someone. People want to comfort others in times of darkness but it can get awkward with knowing what to say. Continuing to live life is the only way that missing someone eventually turns into remembering to miss someone.
