Director Biography - Paul Uhlig

Paul Uhlig was born in 1984 in Hamburg Germany. His time in school was marked by a passion for languages, art, philosophy and most of all music. He was also active in the student counsel and spent six month in London to brush up his English skills. After a year of community service he attended the University of Hamburg, majoring in media studies, continued to work and make music on the side. With his band "The Knights" he recorded several LPs and EPs and toured Germany and the neighboring countries. After achieving his Bachelor of Arts, he interned in four movie productions with director Stephan Wagner, prompting a shift in focus from music to movies. Producing several music videos for his band was the final spark igniting his love for filmmaking. Since then he has been working as a freelancer first, and lately with his own production company, on over a hundred projects so far.

Director Statement

"Red & Gold" is a deeply personal and intimate film, a direct product of a time of profound change in my life. It is a study of the themes of love and loneliness, but beyond that it is questioning my own definition and understanding of these very concepts. Although the film is rather inspired by the "urban experience" in general, than by a particular genre, there are certainly elements of drama, independent cinema and dark humour to be found. The soundtrack - comprised of compositions by myself and selected pieces from associated artists - serves as an emotional leitmotif throughout the film, becoming somewhat of a character in itself.
Despite extensive experience in many fields of film production, "Red & Gold" has been the greatest challenge to me and at the same time the most fulfilling experience in my time as a filmmaker so far. Thanks though to a brilliant cast and a devoted crew, I am supremely proud of the final product, far surpassing my hopes and expectations for my debut film.
My hope would be, for the audience to pose similar questions to themselves watching my protagonists, as I saw myself confronted with writing the script. I myself of course, can only venture an educated guess as to the universal applicability of any answer, I might have found in the process of making the film.
