Director Biography - Rhoda Villegas

My name is Rhoda Villegas (row-duh vee-leh-gahs), I've been scribbling since I was a toddler, working as a professional creative for 16 years, identify as queer (she/her) and born & raised in London, UK. My parents are from the beautiful archipelagic country, Philippines, South East Asia.

After a long stint working as a graphic designer, in 2020, I decided to focus on illustration and get back into animation. I hadn't animated much since graduating in 2006 with BA in Digital Art & Digital Animation (Thames Valley University).

Suffice to say, I don't regret it. After finishing 'Recovery Is...', I started working on another short animation 'Salmo' with director/creator Paul Pajot and French studio La Méridienne (out late 2022). I'm also studying MA Illustration at University of Hertfordshire, where I am working on a partly animated project about my British/Filipina experience.

Director Statement

'Recovery Is...' is my first animated short. I hand drew the frames in Clip Studio Paint then edited in After Effects in 3-4 months, on and off between 2020 and 2021, right in the midst of the pandemic. I originally created the film in response to my grief, after a parent suddenly passed away back in 2017. It really helped me process things as I made it, so I hope you enjoy its message too.
