Rebirth

The Film was developed from working with movement as a response to sound and then with sound as a response to movement. The original sounds used were excerpts from notes on a travel log which were read to the dancers in a natural, rhythmical metre. The dancers were also responding to the meaning of the words and their attendant symbols. They also incorporated a meaningful response to an object placed in the centre of the space. The object referred to an art installation experienced during the original travel to New York and also signifies the mystery of time and rebirth. The music was inspired by Gamelan meditation music, which further facilitates the concept of the screen as doorway to an alternative experience

Director Biography - Linda Landers

Linda Landers grew up in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.

Borehamwood and Elstree was an inspiration to her. She grew up amidst the juxtaposition of industrial and residential areas, with proximity to green belt land and wooded areas. Elstree was also home to the UK’s Major TV and Cinema studios. This strange mix of industry, creativity and nature meant that Borehamwood was never one thing. A childhood could therefore punctuated by days exploring the woods and streams, or later crossing paths with the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Roger Moore.

A natural aptitude for art lead her to study at Watford School of Art, under the auspices of Michael Werner and Peter Schmidt. Visiting tutors included Abram Games and Brian Eno.

At age 16-17 she turned down a music career in favour of going to Art School, studying Fine Art Painting at Central St. Martin’s School of Art.

She developed her art in the direction of limited edition books, wood engravings, and printmaking and continued to read her poetry publicly at various events.

She studied physical theatre and mime with Desmond Jones and started writing plays, making short films and setting her poetry to music; moving from static 2-D art to time-based art forms. Choreographed movements and physical theatre are important aspects of her plays.

In order to immerse herself in acting, she also took on various film and TV roles. Her first lead role was in ‘Ephemeral Nature’ (director Jesus Lopez) which scooped first prize for the director at a fashion film event.

She also appeared in her own short film at the Southbank Centre playing two roles.

After attending a multimedia workshop at Laban Arts Centre she followed through by studying dance at the centre. Her first short film was developed from the experience of the workshop. The film 'The Longing' was shown at Saatchi and Saatchi gum factory.

Linda also has an M.A. in Experimental Film and is currently working on new films, and plays with multimedia elements.

Director Statement

I create films with a view to complete immersion in the experience of both the making and the viewing. My films do not always have to rely on a linear narrative. I’m interested in movement, sound and colour in some films, and in exploring the unseen areas of human experience such as thought.
In other films; drama, fun and exploration, (both of the material, the theme and in a documentary sense), come into play. I also see this as a way of delving into human experience.
