THE STORY BEHIND THE FILM

Between the roots of the World Tree and the tides of the Fusang Sea, an ancient story is told.
Some say it speaks of a White Whale, guiding lost souls across the river between life and death.
Others believe it never truly appears, yet it is everywhere.
In every fall and every rebirth, in every faint light and every breath,
there is the quiet echo of the Whale—
a reminder that within impermanence, the soul will one day take flight.
The White Whale may not be a being at all,
but the awakening within us,
the silent transformation,
as we return to the boundless sky we had always belonged to.

Inspired by timeless myths from both East and West, this film weaves together elements from Journey to the West, Investiture of the Gods, Classic of Mountains and Seas, and Legend of the White Snake, alongside the profound wisdom of the Heart Sutra and Diamond Sutra. At the same time, it echoes the sacred narratives of the Bible and the legendary Yggdrasil, the World Tree from Norse mythology, symbolizing the eternal cycle of creation, destruction, and rebirth. Through this fusion of ancient traditions, the story unfolds as a bridge between cultures, exploring universal themes of destiny, enlightenment, and transcendence.

Director Biography - Chih Hao Shen

Storytelling has always been at the core of my creative exploration.
Through film, I seek to capture the delicate interplay between image, memory, and emotion, striving to reflect the shared experiences that connect us all.

My work has been officially selected and recognized at international film festivals, including awards for Best Animated Short Film and Best Debut Filmmaker. These moments of recognition strengthen my commitment to creating narratives that transcend borders and cultures.

Beyond filmmaking, my creative journey extends across publishing and visual arts. I have published multiple art education books across Asia (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and China), and have released original picture book comics. These experiences deepen my understanding of visual storytelling and the fusion of text, image, and cultural identity.

With two decades of experience in film merchandise design — including contributions to the Chinese-language official merchandise for The Lord of the Rings — I have cultivated a fascination with the intersection of Eastern and Western narratives, a theme that continues to shape my artistic voice.

Looking forward, I aspire to create works that explore universal themes of resilience, destiny, and the human spirit, while responding to contemporary global issues such as war, displacement, human rights, and environmental concerns.
I also hope to adapt my picture book creations into animated feature films, continuing to experiment with the ways visual storytelling can inspire, heal, and connect.

Director Statement

This short film is a meditation on life, death, and the quiet rebirth that follows every ending. It is a visual poem about the eternal cycle of existence—how all things rise, fall, and return again in different forms. Inspired by both Eastern philosophy and Western myth, the story weaves together the image of the World Tree and Fusang Sea, connecting heaven and earth, past and future, life and death.

At the heart of the film is the White Whale, a silent guide through the vast rivers of the soul. Though unseen, it exists within every journey, every transformation. It is not something to be chased or captured. It lives in us—as us. In the end, the seeker becomes the guide, and the voyage home becomes a return to one’s true self.

Through shifting landscapes—ancient trees, falling stars, rivers flowing toward the sky—this work seeks to explore a universal truth: that the meaning of life is not found in holding on, but in letting go. Not in conquering, but in becoming. We are not separate from the world around us; we are part of its endless unfolding.

This film is not meant to give answers, but to offer a quiet space where each viewer might find their own. A reminder that beyond all storms, there is always stillness. And in that stillness, the beginning of everything.
