Raquel Freire is a filmmaker, writer, screenwriter, producer, citizen and mother. The films “Rio Vermelho”, “Rasganço”, “Veneno Cura”, “Esta e a minha cara”, “Dreamocracy”, “Mulheres do Meu País”, “Diferentness”, premiered at International Film Festivals such as Venice, Turin, São Paulo, Montreal, Gwanju, Leeds, Clermont- Ferrand, Porto PosDoc, Porto Femme, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin among others, in the cinemas and televisions in Portugal and in France.
She was distinguished at the Cannes Festival by the European Film Foundation as a young European producer.
She debuted as a theatre director, a creator and a performer with NOSOUTRXS, which premiered in the Temps D'Images Festival.
Raquel is a guest professor at Portuguese and foreign universities in the areas of cinema, gender studies, art and politics.
She published the book TRANSIBERICLOVE in 2014 and it sold out in the same year. In 2016 she published the short story DARK BLUE, edited in German and released in 2017 at the Frankfurt International Book Fair.
She won the CNC (Centre National du Cinéma Français) competition for writing support for the feature fiction film TRANSIBERICLOVE. The book that gave origin to it was republished in 2021.
She directed BY THE HAND OF ALICE, a documentary about Boaventura Sousa Santos as guest artist of the ALICE Project /CES /University of Coimbra.
She co-directed with Tainá Maneschy the animation film WOMEN OF MY COUNTRY, premiered in MAAT in 2020.
In 2021 Raquel debuted the documentary trilogy STORIES OF WOMEN FROM MY COUNTRY on the national television channel RTP1.
Raquel directed and produced the film WOMEN OF MY COUNTRY which was awarded an Honorable Mention at the Porto Femme International Film Festival in 2022.
She co-directed with La Ribot the short film DIFERENTNESS with the company Dançando com a Diferença in 2022.
She is an Advisory Board Member at Portugal Invisíveis e insubmissas: Leading Women in Portuguese and Spanish Cinema and Television, University of Exeter, U.K. University of Oxford and University of Kent.
She finishes her 3rd fiction feature film FILM WITHOUT CAMERA.
Raquel is in the pre-production of her next film WOMEN OF APRIL. for 2025.
