Groundwater today into the future: Impact stories from participants of online courses on professional drilling management
The Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) established the first online course on Professional Drilling Management, which was run in 2018 and 2019. These courses reached 172 people in 57 countries, setting out to improve their professionalism and thereby increase the sustainability of developed water sources.
This short film presents the testimonials of six course participants from around the world. The stories show how adjustments have been made to institutional procedures, as well as redesigning of organizational standards for professional drilling management.
In some organisations, the attendance of the course, coupled with interest and determination by the participants themselves, has led to the inclusion of mandatory supervision of all drilling procedures through the engagement of a resident consultant.
Thanks to the training and its application, new policies have been drafted to shift contractor risk of dry holes to a shared risk. And last, but by no means least, the course has impacted on professional personnel who are educating future generations in the formal education sector.
The views expressed are those of the individuals and not necessarily those of their organisations.

Fadzai is a Zimbabwean water specialist with a passion for groundwater, an MSc in Integrated Water Resources Management, a BSc in Biological Sciences and certificates in Professional Drilling Management, Project Management and National NGO program for Humanitarian Leadership (NNPHL); and over 8 years working in the humanitarian and development sector.
She developed this film with Tigzozo Media, in Harare, Zimababwe, to raise awareness of the Rural Water Supply Network (RWSN) online groundwater courses and share the experiences of some of the participants.
As a person who has had the experience of fetching water from a distance, I have a passion to bring water closer to people in a sustainable way.
In 2020 (and still ongoing), I joined the RWSN mentorship programme where I had the privilege of being mentored by Dr Kerstin Danert, Director of Ask for Water GmbH. The mentorship programme has helped me grow in my profession through increased knowledge on groundwater development, networking connections in the water sector, membership in the online groundwater courses advisory group. All this has boosted my confidence and sharpened my skills as a WASH professional.
I have a naturally inclusive personality and genuinely enjoy supporting others to fulfil their potential through a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
