RISE

Black vampires, (Nyara) are at the brink of uprising in New Brooklyn, years after climate disaster has ravaged cities dry. Vampires stalk the night, but Nyara have been enslaved for centuries. It’s now time to RISE. One non-binary Nyara, Toni, has a secret gift, but wakes in the woods bleeding, starving, alone, with no memory. In order to lead the fight against The Light Ones, (vampires without melanin), Toni must confront their past and accept a warrior’s destiny. RISE is a queer Afrofuturist revolutionary tale charged with spine-tingling fight scenes, visceral love, and duh, collective liberation.

Writer Statement

RISE explores the brutality of racism, impending climate change and the intersectionality of the two through the lens of a Black vampire and their Latina love. RISE reimagines intimacy, subverts familiar vampire tropes, and offers a world where desire demands consent. A world where gender and sexuality are fluid and celebrated. A world that asks: how far would you be willing to go for personal and cultural revolution?
