Director Statement

After George Floyd happened I started listening to the world in a different way. People's stories stayed with me and changed me. I thought maybe if I can capture some of these stories and share them with others it might change them too. I also felt there was a lot of confusion about what is okay and not okay to say and do when it comes to addressing racism amongst our friends, family and co-workers. So I set out to answer a few key questions with the hope of helping to create a basic foundation of empathy and understanding from which we can grow. RACE to be Human is basically a story of definitions told through micro stories.

I filmed 50+ people, mostly kids and have 40 hours of footage from the UK, HK and North America. I worked with remote crews and directed via zoom for the international shoots while physically traveling to film in North America. Being mixed race it was a therapeutic experience to listen to these kids share their resilience which reminded me of some of my own journey I had long since forgotten. I learned that we have a long way to go but we will get there. There is more hope and love in the world than there is hate.
