Director Biography - Mok Yuk Kuen

於浸大傳理學院，主修電影。現於城大修讀創意媒體藝術碩士。
首作〈大龍鳳〉即入選鮮浪潮短片展等多個海內外電影節、並獲「台灣酷兒影展 – 新酷子獎」及「張國興傑出青年傳播人獎 – 金獎」。2018 年修畢「香港電影導演會」導演課程後，繼有〈天還未亮〉、〈染〉等劇情作品。近年分別憑〈在漂流地〉、〈絲絲〉連續兩屆獲「創+作」最佳編劇獎等多個獎項。最近以〈今晚月色很美〉入圍ifva比賽 (公開組)。獨愛遊走偏鋒，期望發掘更多敍事可能。　

Green Mok is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) degree in Creative Media at CityU. His first film, The Dragon and Phoenix Show, was screened at the Fresh Wave Short Film and Video Festival as well as numerous other film festivals. Recently, he has won the Best Screenplay Award of Microfilm Production Support Scheme (Music) two years in a row for The Drifter and Queens, with the latter being selected by the Hong Kong Independent Film Festival. He is fond of going to the extremes and looks forward to discovering more narrative possibilities.

Director Statement

With the aid of financial subsidy from Microfilm Production Support Scheme (Music) which is supported by CreateHK, I got an opportunity to collaborate with Miss Amanda Lee Wai Man, a has-been superstar in HK, who was a Canton-pop legend back in early
90s. Along with the dispute with record company and the shrinking of entertainment industry after 1997, her singing career has almost slammed on the brakes. It was an August day in 2019 so humid that we were having our first informal screenplay meeting in an Italian restaurant along Hollywood Road, and Amanda Lee felt relaxed. She told me a secret during idea brainstorming. She was informed that she was an adopted-child when she has grown up, so she has a complex mother-daughter relationship with her foster
mother. I was much moved by her sensation so I decided Queens would be a fictional story about connections between a mother and a superstar daughter based on Amanda’s true story.

In order to make the production design looks more glamorous and campy, I intended to add a side-character of a drag-queen in the plot. I looked up on Instagram and surprisingly found that
there is a famous Singaporean drag queen, Vanda Miss Joaquim, whose outlook very much looks alike to Amanda. She was quickly accepted my invitation to come to Hong Kong to be one of our
casts. I was asking her to play a version of himself/herself too—an ordinary kid who desired to be a diva superstar, he dressed-up as a drag-queen to performing lip-sync to the Veronica’s song in a
gay bar. He tried to be a substitution of Veronica and fulfill the wish on her mother.
