Jacob Miguel is a Director and Producer from Austin Texas.
When I first heard about the Punk Rock Lottery event, I knew it was something special that needed to be captured. The idea of a bunch of misfits, often seen as jobless rebels, coming together to forge their own world of acceptance and creativity is like a punk rock anthem to me. Being a musician myself in the Austin underground scene, I knew that this couldn't be approached like any ordinary film. The grit and raw energy of the event, much like the punk movement itself, had to shine through every step of the production. Nothing about this could be cookie-cutter or it would betray its essence. In today's world, there's so much pressure to fit a certain mold for success. It feels like everyone's curating their lives for Instagram, turning them into polished ads. But this project flips the script. For an hour and a half, we get to dive into a realm where money isn't the ruler and conformity is still a four-letter word. It's a scene that's fading fast, just like the affordable rent in Austin. But the folks who call it home are tough and adaptable, as long as they don't have to compromise their principles. We've learned a lot along the way, even if our insights aren't always neatly wrapped up. We've met so many driven folks all with a shared message. It's the idea that impermanence isn't something to dread or make us indifferent. Instead, it can be a reason to celebrate. Get creative right now, embrace this moment, and don't hesitate to ask questions. Remember, you can achieve anything if you stay afloat and set realistic expectations. The journey itself is the prize. Time has flown by, feeling like a lifetime compressed into a heartbeat. And in that whirlwind, we've captured a story. Maybe not the one we thought we'd find, but in doing so, we've grasped the wisdom our mentors passed down through the ages. Our story is a rallying cry! Don't just sit around dreaming of the script you'll write or the band you'll form. Stand up, take action, and go create something uniquely yours. Now go start your own band!
