Public Art Relocated: Virgil Cantini's 1964 Tunnel Mosaic
In February of 2024, Virgil Cantini’s 1964 tunnel mosaic was reinstalled on the walls of a hallway at the Steel Plaza T light rail station in Downtown Pittsburgh, marking the end of a seven-year process to save the late artist’s 28-panel mosaic from potential destruction and rehome it. Now, once again, people can be surrounded by public art in a walkway in Downtown Pittsburgh – honoring Cantini’s artistic intention.
