The original idea is dead. Flatlined. A doornail. Kaput. All the great themes have been dissected and resurrected countless times over. Love and Loss. Life and Death. Good vs. Evil. Power and Corruption. Betrayal. Revenge. Survival. And on and on and on....
Fortunately for movie lovers, original stories are alive and well! How we tell them and the characters who inhabit them enable us to find different truths within the same archetype.
With that in mind, and in honor of our five-year anniversary, 4 Leagues Media set out to tell a classic horror story, utterly familiar to fans of the genre, but with new twists on old tropes. On the one hand, it’s a film straight from our playbook ― tightly plotted and meticulously paced ― but on the other hand, it’s brand new territory for us. From the lighting to the special effects to the prominent role of technology in the film, we took some new and calculated risks on this one, much like our hero resigns to do.
Speaking of Laurel Rhodes, I think audiences are going to love her! As a popular hiking vlogger bent on exploring remote wilderness areas, we realized that she had to be brave, engaging, and authentic in order to captivate her online followers and moviegoers alike. Her personality and behavior are essential to the story and justification for any decisions she makes along the way. That old chestnut is as true as ever ― if your audience doesn’t care about your characters, they won’t care what happens to them either.
So, here we sit by the campfire, ready to share another ghost story in the dark. While every 4 Leagues film is uniquely special to us, each one a valentine to this medium we love so dearly, Psycho Path is the most important one yet in our canon. It displays advancement on every level of our tradecraft, and explores topics and tropes we think core audiences will find deeply satisfying. The original idea is dead, but our passion for telling fresh and inventive stories is not. I hope this one scares the living daylights out of you. We like it when you’re afraid.
