Director Statement

When I first read PRO - Tiana’s hilarious, thought provoking and heart warming script, I knew immediately that it was a project I wanted to be apart of. When we started working on it together and the script entered its final form, I saw more of what it was - a deeply personal and cathartic expression of sexual frustration and confusion in a time when sex has become extremely everywhere all at once. Sex, it seems, in the online, social verbatim of the times, has become everything and nothing - it’s once stark edges of definition and rule have become blurred and blended into a wisp of faint color.

In the outside world at least, (or that outside world that is the progressive online bubble in which our characters live) it seems like even the definition of sex has changed, (what counts and what doesn’t as discussed between Elle, Camille and Billy) - but what about individually, have all of us really kept up with the times, have we all really become as sexually fluid and advanced as the internet would have us believe? In Elle’s case, the answer is a definitive no.

Having been friends with Tiana for nearly 13 years, I knew that this story and its characters were incredibly important to the writer, not just in the telling but in how they existed in this very online place they live and occupy.

The juxtaposition between something that is experienced as a collective in our outer world, versus the very intimate, personal inward experiences we have, or don’t have, behind closed doors. And because of that closeness, not just in my friendship with the writer but with the writer to the words, it felt like a story and a film I absolutely had to be apart of in telling. I’m so happy I did and I’m so proud of our film. It’s message and dialogue feel incredibly apt and important today, especially in our ever evolving social and political landscape, where sexual ‘wokeness’ feels threatened. We had such an incredible team working on this, and I always feel so lucky to work on a project where all department keys are women - an element that lent to an open, enriching discord on set about the film’s themes.

PRO is a story both about letting go and holding on. Of submission and freedom, but also of personal conviction and self expression - it’s funny and it might make you cry a little, we hope you love it as much as we do.
