Director Statement

In 2020 my wife (and writer, co-producer and actor in Prepared) had just moved to San Diego from Seattle as she was getting her MFA at UCSD. A week before the shut down my mother passed away quite suddenly and we were both trying to figure out how to process all of this sadness as the world was living in a constant state of fear and uncertainty. 6 months later my father passed away after a long battle with Alzheimers. The grief was overwhelming as my brother and I tried to figure out how to maneuver through the world as orphans. Keiko had written Prepared as a short theater piece and it directly addressed what we were all feeling while also being strange and funny. We decided to film it as a short the following year with our friends and colleagues up in the Pacific Northwest which had been my home for over 20 years. The themes in Prepared are a direct reflection of the year our country dipped into darkness. The year the world seemed to be ending and my world had lost two of the brightest lights in my parents. No matter how we prepare for the worst or the inevitable, no matter how much we try to keep a brave face or tuck the sadness away; nothing can prepare you for the loss of someone you love. My parents, Barb and Dave, had always fostered and supported my life in the arts and the inherent struggle that comes when trying to keep your head above water with love, compassion and humor. This film is dedicated to their memory.
