Director Biography - Marco Castiglione

I am a director and a VFX Artist and for about 20 years I have been moving into the entertainment world. I started as an actor and now I'm continuing as a director and not only. Besides being a VFX Artist, I am also a 3D modeller, photographer, creator, video maker and editor. I deal with 2,5D compositing but I also know how to cook, wash, iron and much more. Over the years I have accumulated experience. Back in 2005, Anthony La Molinara (search on google) presented my first Sci-fi short film in Rome. From then on I didn't stop. At the same time, in Rome, I did theater with some success in the theaters of the capital. And then, at the end of my studies, I went first to London and then to Dubai to pursue my 3D Artist dream. Returning to the short in question, I assumed the role of a factotum in the city where I live. I toured the country far and wide, and thanks to my loved ones (friends and relatives) I played all (or almost all) roles. I have loaded, with these arms, about 1000 kg between monitors, old printers, various electronic equipment, pieces of scenography lent by my friends and relatives to give life to this short. I was also the electrician costume designer of the short, therefore, I bought from shoes to led lights; from brooms to plastic tarpaulins. For many and many months. And thanks to my wife's constant collaboration, all this was possible. Believe me, emotional and moral support is the strength of all forces!

Director Statement

For the realization of the short film it took about 3 years of work. The biggest section of the movie was the computer graphics. Almost half of the short film was entirely made in 3D graphics. It took around 20,000 hours of rendering and around 20 Terabytes of storage space. The initial part of the work was the study of the script together with the protagonist, Renata. Together with her we built the characters of Gea (Renata) and her father (Marco). One of the greatest difficulties was the preparation of the main scenography. About a ton of computer components and electronic items were transported by one person, myself. All the people of the cast artists and the technical cast who participated, contributed for free. This short film is dedicated to all those who have helped me with their heart, arms and mind. The shots were taken with a Panasonic Gh4 DSLR and with two different lenses: Sony SAL 16-50mm F / 2.8 and Sigma 18-35mm f / 1.8. No stands or supports were used for the shooting. Filming was mainly done freehand. The capture format of the footage was Cine4K. To illuminate the scene, a 650 Kw Beam type Spot and Kinoflo type fluorescent lights were mainly used. Regarding the Vfx, the work was long and intense. About 5 Windows 10 Pro PCs were used to make this short film. The main modeling software used was 3D Studio Max 2017. The rendering engine used for the final rendering of the scenes was FStorm. The export format of the scenes was 2800 pixels. The final export format of the entire short film was QHD (2560x1440 pixels). The post-production of the scenes was mainly done with Nuke and After Effects. Film editing was done with Premiere Pro and audio editing was created with Audition CC. The music, created by myself, was composed and edited with Fruitloop. An important role was also played by my friends and colleagues 3D Artist Antonello Suriano, Aurelio La Ferla and Filippo Soldateschi, for their invaluable help.
