Lina Khatib is a writer, director, and photographer. Her credits include co-directing the music video of “Twin Star” by the Mumfees and Enfleurage, which is available to watch on Amazon Prime.
She was a writer on The Pack Theater’s house sketch team Whoops! along with Brutus. In 2021, Lina received a certificate for completing the UCLA Writing for Television Professional Program. She has a Bachelors in English from The Ohio State University. In 2014 she attended the "Beyond the Ceiling: Groundbreaking Voices of American Muslim Women" Event at The White House. Lina grew up in Columbus, OH and currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.
I grew up as a Palestinian Muslim American a predominately in a post 9/11 world in Columbus, Ohio. So naturally, like every other midwestern millennial, I grew up on Spielberg movies, Star
Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. It was the easiest ways for me to connect with my classmates, and it made me feel less othered. The more I got into the science fiction genre the more I learned and realized a lot of it is heavily inspired by the Middle East, yet we were rarely the ones telling genre stories. I’ve always been drawn to filmmaking, I’ve wanting to direct since I was 12 years old.
I moved to Los Angeles almost a decade ago to pursue my goals, and during that time I was able to have a lot of incredible experiences. I co-directed an avant garde short film and a music video. I’ve been on a handful of sets in various roles. Given the stats on women in film, especially minority women, my overall experience is a testament to why that even happens. I’ve had to learn on my own and go the independent route. It wasn’t due to a lack of trying, I’ve interviewed at the top talent agencies numerous times and have spent years trying to get a PA job on a tv show. To make ends meet, I took a detour working in fashion retail.
I wanted to take matters into my own hands. I was sick of waiting around for an opportunity that wasn’t coming. So I started writing Posies from a place of hope. I’ve been working on my craft as a writer and director but I wanted to make a short film to showcase my voice and artistic style. The age old saying is “write what you know” that’s exactly what I did. I used my fashion retail experience to write Posies. It’s a project that means a lot to me and I’m thrilled to have brought it to life.
