Portraying Perfect
A model’s job relies on her appearance. She will do whatever it takes to make it perfect, especially when she is the face of a brand. The brand may be no more than sugar-free gum, but she still pays the price for the facade. Just as her commercials hide the harshness of how to lose weight healthily, her beautiful smile hides the harsh reality of an eating disorder.

This film was created for my Aesthetics of Motion Picture class, but became something more than just a class project. We were tasked with making a short film without dialog, conveying ideas only through images and sound. I wanted to tell a story that had a purpose, and challenges like eating disorders are super important but insufficiently discussed. Many people struggle in secret and alone with an eating disorder, and this short’s purpose is to shine a little light into that space.
