Polaroid

Sue is a woman who feels past her prime, after she attempts a one night stand. She finds a series of intimate polaroids left by a previous couple who show her what she's been missing.

Years previously we see David and Nicole, a couple who are trying to rekindle the spark in their strained relationship with a romantic weekend away. The discovery of the same polaroids sparks an argument showing them what they used to have and what has changed between them.

Finally, a decade earlier, we meet Jamie and Louise who took the photos, reminding us of the charged connection of youthful love.

Director Biography - Richard Harvey

Richard Harvey is a 23 year old director from Dublin. Coming from a family with a background in theatre and a keen interest in photography Richard has always been passionate about visual storytelling.

A recent graduate from IADT, Richard has directed a short film every year during his time in college, including his graduate film Polaroid and his third year visual drama Real Horrorshow. His films have been described as arthouse, generally exploring themes such as connection, alienation, persona and toxic masculinity. He’s also made a litany of music videos including his most recent project My Dog for the electro rock group, Pecking Party.

Director Statement

Polaroid is a film exploring the expectations people put on relationships. Sue is a woman who thinks what she needs is a one night stand when in reality she needs an intimate connection. For David and Nicole, marriage didn’t turn out as they expected it to. We end the film with a romanticised representation of the young love which everyone is striving to gain.

The story is inspired by the feeling of sonder when an object or an act suddenly makes the viewer aware of the world around them and that everyone has their own story.

I’m very conscious of how I present my characters on screen. Over the last few years I’ve realised that women (especially over 30) get overall less screen time than men do, and most of the time only a certain type of man gets time in the spotlight. Thats why in Polaroid we get an intimate look at a woman in her forties whose looking for a one night stand and a woman in her thirties whose just had a child, who we even see using a breast pump. As well as this the cool, smooth talking male character in act 2 is the one stuck in a loveless relationship as he’s unable to show compassion and the sensitive scrawny boy in act 3 is the only male in the film whose capable of truly being in love.

My goal for this film was to try and create a mini universe of real feeling people to make the viewer consider their own place in the world and feel normal.
