Poisoned Soil
Man has been cultivating the land for 11 000 years and it has been 2500 years since he has been using a plough. By 1950 half of the arrable land of the world has become unsuitable for cultivation due to increasingly intensive agricultural technologies. Up to 2010 we have ruined another 30%.
The world's agriculture has to sustain an ever growing mass of peolpe under conditions that are getting worse day by day. The most profound arguments for intensive technology is that such a mass of people cannot be supplied with food using other methods. Because of employing tillage, artificial fertilisers and other chemicals the topsoil is getting thinner and thinner, and arrable land is decreasing.
How much food can be produced in the area still available? How is the number of earthworms connected to the amount of food that can be produced? Does an alternative way of cultivation exist at all, to replace intensive agricultural technologies?
Poisoned Earth is an awareness-rising, educational film but the examples and events are shown in a documentary fashion. This is what makes the way the film is looking for answers to the questions above so dramatic.

Over the decades, the soil just became a place. A place for producing food. Machines farm it, lab grown seeds are planted, and artificial fertilizers are used. While we use it up, exploit it, we do not notice the price we have to pay
