Please Remember Me
This film is more than a tale of romantic love. It tells the story of Cai Yun, a local opera actress of small town fame, who travels to Shanghai in hopes of becoming a film star. She moves in with her childhood friend, Ah Wei, who, unbeknownst to her, is living precariously as a tenant in a “nail house” (a residence whose owners are holding out against demolition plans by refusing to leave) of a Shikumen lane. In the dilapidated building, she discovers Ah Wei’s collection of old Shanghai film reels and becomes enamored with the characters and stories from an unfamiliar period of filmmaking. She grows particularly fond of Huang Zongying’s acting and begin to aspire to her fame and legacy. However, after learning of the hardships Huang endured in both life and love, she comes to see how difficult it is to pursue one’s dreams in Shanghai, regardless of era. Ah Wei, on the other hand, has long been grappling with harsh reality. While working all day to make ends meet, he films for Pan, an independent director who impresses Ah Wei with her idealism. Things begin to shift when a microfilm he makes with Cai Yun goes viral on the internet. Their film attracts the attention of a Hong Kong film producer, who invites Cai Yun to try her luck in Beijing by debuting in one of his films. Cai Yun is thrilled, but when Ah Wei refuses to go with her, their budding romance is put to the test.
Running parallel to Cai Yun and Ah Wei’s story is the story of Huang Zongying and Zhao Dan. Huang left home for Shanghai in 1941 at the age of 16, where she played bit roles in a theater troupe until being scouted for the film Rhapsody of Happiness. She met Zhao Dan on set, fell in love, and started a family with him. Their blissful life was shattered in the 1960s, when Huang discovered Zhao was having an extra-marital affair. She offered to deliver his written confession of the affair to the party herself and cried the whole way. Zhao Dan came under attack during the subsequent period of political turmoil, but Huang remained loyally by his side. At 92, she looks back on her life and says, “My greatest achievement in this life was marrying Zhao Dan. His life was so tumultuous, I often didn’t know what to do. I just held on to him tightly and tried to share his burden.”
The film draws out the resonances between these two love stories and the tireless pursuit of movie-making in the two periods. The stories in both periods feature characters who are trying to find themselves through the love and sacrifice required of filmmaking. Both feature characters who try to find meaning in life through film.
