Planet Zero

A day before the launch of ‘Centauri 1' (an interstellar space mission) at the 'Stellar Abode' space centre in India; crew member Dr Avani Bali creates a social media outrage. As a result of her pessimistic outlook on the mission and the actions taken towards our planet, the Board of Directors of 'Stellar Abode' vote to replace her, hours before the mission launch. When mission commander, Sia Rajani learns about the decision, she immediately works towards changing it. However, Sia finds herself unaligned with Avani’s belief and opinion on the matter and is therefore uncertain of the action she must take as a commander, partner, and human being on this planet.

Director Biography - Beavan D'Mello

Born and brought up in the small town of Margao in Goa, India; from a very early age, I was drawn toward the creative arts. Taking part in art, music, singing, writing and acting activities, eventually developing a passion for writing and making films; deciding my path at a young age. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (Four years), specialised in Photography from Goa College of Art. During those years I developed my skills in visual arts, storyboarding, animation and editing. In 2019 I moved to Mumbai for further studies. I also hold a Diploma in Filmmaking degree (Two years), specialised in Direction from Whistling Woods International in Mumbai. The two years helped me understand the art of cinema and further develop my skills in Filmmaking. During that time I learnt more about Direction, Cinematography, Sound Design, Editing and Production design by assisting in 7 short films and, Directing and writing 4, including a 15-minute Diploma/Degree Film. Once out of film school, I had the opportunity to work on an Advertisement campaign for Boathouse Media, as well as assist in the Direction team (Post-production) for ‘Brahmāstra: Part One’ and the Creative development team for ‘Brahmāstra: Part Two’; getting extensive experience in Communication with the Music team, supervising recording sessions and concept designs.

Director Statement

Having been a Space and Fantasy fiction fanatic, I wanted to make a film that also spoke about my Love and concern for our Planet. I find the concept of Interstellar travel and the need to spread our species onto other planets for our guaranteed survival very much compulsory, but I can't help also being concerned and sensitive about our own planet Earth. I therefore, made this film keeping in mind three characters that represent the opportunity and two different trains of thought. Dir. John Dias being the very much necessary opportunity of Interstellar travel, Dr. Avani representing the idea of leaving Earth as a necessity for survival, versus CDR. Sia representing the idea of Space exploration. Via the character of CDR. Sia, the story of the film also points out a level of hypocrisy that lies underneath and questions the character and many others' ideologies if they themselves wouldn’t be able to contribute to what they believe in. This ties in directly with the question the film is meant to raise. The concept of searching for an Earth-like planet to colonize while the quality and current condition of Earth itself needs to be addressed urgently. Meant to acknowledge the direction in Stellar travel that we as humans are inevitably headed for while we leave our home planet in a wounded state.
