Following the U.S. Army withdrawal from Vietnam at the Fall of Saigon, South Vietnam was left to the mercy of the communist forces. A South Vietnamese soldier and his family would escape Vietnam by boat whereby they would settle in Australia. In 1996, 15 years after they left, the soldier and his family would return to Vietnam to visit the soldier’s father whereby the soldier would bring along a video camera. Told through the eyes of the soldier’s son Patrick, this story tells of the observations that Patrick made about the relationship of his father and grandfather and how it affected him over the years. The story showcases a 9 second moment of love between Patrick’s father and grandfather that was candidly captured on film - a moment that inspired Patrick to spend the next 28 years to tell the story through film. In time Patrick would start his own family and after witnessing a once in a lifetime moment with his daughter, he would feel compelled to complete the story for his daughter for her to also understand the journey. In addition, the story provides the audience with an understanding of the mental health issues that many refugees and their families experienced which is relevant in the world today.
