I wrote "Pieces of Me" after my goddaughter had an adverse reaction to a wrongfully prescribed medicine. One day she woke up and she had become a completely different person. At times, she was full of energy and lacked any type of self-consciousness; minutes later, she would remain silent. She questioned everything and, at the same time, she was sure of everything.
It took more than three months for her body to get rid of that medicine and its side effects.
When she was back to her old self, I asked her if she could fully remember how she felt during those months. She replied something along the lines of "It was like having a constant discussion in my head. Like I wasn’t me anymore, but just some pieces of myself”.
She had a painfully enhanced experience of the inner discussion that we all have inside ourselves. I felt her pain, but I also felt my own.
I was just months away from getting married and as I tried to juggle the roles of a son and brother with my new role as a husband, I wrote “Pieces of Me”.
And of course, since the film was about discussing with oneself, I decided all the characters had to be portrayed by the same actress, so that after filming we had to take all the pieces of Gretta Marston (“Lucía”) talking by herself and turn them into a cohesive narrative by the mere power of editing.
