Tanner began his filmmaking career at a young age in Covina, CA making skateboarding videos and everyone else's school video projects (willingly and happily). Once in high school he began shifting his focus to short form narrative storytelling, completing several shorts while continuing to be everyone's go-to resource for help with their school video projects.
Tanner took a short hiatus from filmmaking to play football on a full-ride scholarship at the University of Kansas. After starting as a freshman, Tanner made the decision to stop playing football to pursue filmmaking full time. He immediately began production on his first feature length documentary, RUBIO which was released in limited theaters in 2014.
Since then Tanner has worked on numerous projects both independently and as well as with prolific filmmakers such as Kevin Willmott, Micah Brown, and Andy Byers. His filmmaking talents and creative problem solving skills have provided him opportunities to work on various multi-media projects.
Tanner currently works for Denver Parks & Recreation as the creative end in the marketing department and is an editor for Erik Anders Lang. His latest film is a short noir titled, Perpetual Us.
I made this film having two intentions. The first was to tell a story about intentions, particularly intentions during heightened emotions and the regret that follows. College is an interesting time in person’s life where we are still adolescent in nature but are meeting adulthood rapidly. What does that look like socially?
Perpetual Us to me is coming of age story by the way of the noir genre. The characters that are narcissistic, insecure, and have ulterior motives due to their social situations. Characters that never stop to think about addressing their issues and instead try to carry out plans that they feel keep them in control but ultimately take things too far.
My second intention was more formal; Can you make a short film feel like a feature?
I wanted to give everyone involved an opportunity to work on their craft and a space to play that you usually don’t get with a short narrative film. The film was made will no budget and no crew (which was challenging but rewarding.) Made purely on elbow grease, just myself, the actors and a camera. We all wanted the opportunity to work, learn, and fail, an opportunity we as filmmakers don’t always get.
