Director Statement

Penance is a gritty survival thriller with a science fiction twist. It begins by exploring what life could be like for a first Australian living 65,000 years ago and evolves into a thrilling exploration of what life could be like in the near future if we are not careful.

This short film is a small snapshot of a longer feature length animated film I am working on.

I find it fascinating to explore emerging and disruptive technologies that involve man merging with technology, and the uniquely thrilling scenarios and philosophical contemplation that could result.

Epic Games challenged filmmakers to learn and create a film in 6 weeks using their software 'Unreal Engine'. My goal was to create a film that is of high quality and can be realistically executed within the short allotted time of 6 weeks for this project. This story focuses on a lone protagonist character whom has no-dialogue, but has rich non-verbal performances supported by thrilling action, sublime environments, and sound design.

The film purposely ends on a cliff-hanger with more questions than answers. I have a longer, deeper and even more thrilling story to continue on in this story universe. It is my hope that with the success of this film I can arrange support to continue its unique story.

Finally, I should mention I'm a whitefella, and I want more first Australian characters represented in both films and animations. I want to have a First Australian man as a lead role in my story, and I want to show my respect and support to the traditional owners and people of my amazing country through collaborative art and storytelling. I collaborated with Jonathon Saunders, a local indigenous animator and script consultant to ensure I do it right and respectfully.
